At the start of the summer swim session, her new teacher informed us that she truly should never have been put into Level 3 because she "doesn't really listen," "doesn't imitate well," and "cannot coordinate her body (to do the crawl and rotary breathe)." In an extremely loud, insanely humid pool area, I very briefly explained anxiety, ADHD, learning disabilities, and complicated pasts. She agreed to keep her in the class for summer bc it's small, but told me she was likely getting demoted in the fall.
I'm not a very good swimmer. Basically I can keep myself alive and swim in a lake with a nondescript stroke for a while.
But I felt like we had a project over the last 8 weeks, and I kind of tried to teach myself how to do a proper crawl so I could help. For the life of me, there's no ******* way I could ever do that somersault/kick the wall/shoot away from it business, but we did what we could, and she only got pissed at me every 3rd or 4th time.
She didn't know she was being evaluated today in that huge pool as they made her and a couple classmates front stroke/backstroke the entire length, dive off the board, demo a dolphin kick, retrieve stuff off the bottom, etc.
Afterward she said, "Mom, when we have to go so fast that you can't even breathe at all even a little bit, was that a RACE?" (Yep, and she came in in the MIDDLE.)
They let her stay in Level 3 for next session. I'm super happy and proud, and she has no idea how high my heart rate was while watching today.
She loves drive throughs. BK veggie burger w pickles and ketchup for supper after. ;)
