I joined the entire city of Auburn in the grocery store today. At the close of my trip, I went through the checkout lane of a pink-cheeked, joyful cashier who is not in a hurry at this point in her life. She remarked with curiosity on several of my purchases, and we chatted about tomorrow. She is going to 'come down with a small stomach bug', she told me, eyebrows raised conspiratorially, and stay home from her grandson's Thanksgiving. He lives around here anyway, and she sees him often, but he has a 120 pound dog who won't listen when she tells him to do something, and there will be a lot of people and chaos. She told me, winking, that she has bought herself a bottle of wine. She informed me in a whisper that she has a book about Donald Trump and his election, waiting for her in a bag from her latest library trip, that she cannot wait to read while sitting peacefully in her living room with her wine and no radio or television making noise. All of the whispering and eyebrow raising made me smile a lot in the midst of the shopping craziness, and I hope she has a marvelous, pleasant day. Whatever you choose to participate in tomorrow, peace or chaos or somewhere in between, I hope you have just the kind of day you want, as well. Happy Thanksgiving.
